Hot SRT diesel models are possible in future for Chrysler and Dodge according to Michael Accavitti, Director of SRT Product Planning and Marketing. 

So far DaimlerChrysler’s Street and Racing Technology department is best known for high-performance versions of muscle cars such as the 425hp 6.1-litre V8 Chrysler 300C SRT8 and Dodge Charger SRT8. Nevertheless, Accavitti told DieselForecast: “SRT doesn’t have to be a gas V8. We’ve produced the SRT4 (based on the four-cylinder Dodge Caliber) and we’re looking for opportunities in the future for all sorts of engines.

“I can imagine an SRT with diesel if it could deliver the essential five points of an SRT vehicle: a gorgeous exterior, awesome power, a performance-orientated interior, great braking and excellent ride and handling.”

A recent visit to Europe convinced him that there would be no problem with any of the above. He said: “The torque of the Grand Cherokee 3.0 V6 CRD is unbelievable, it gives the impression of so much power. I drove a Mercedes E320 CDi with the 3-litre diesel V6 home and it was one of those cars where you deliberately catch the red lights so you can accelerate away!”

Gasoline SRT8 has 420 lb ft of torque, diesel CRD makes 376 lb ft.

He continued: “We’re always looking for ways to take advantage of the technology we have within the corporation. An SRT diesel would be the best of both worlds.” (For performance with economy.)

In Europe, where large petrol engines are punished with high taxes, diesel SUVs and even high-performance sedans by makers such as Mercedes and BMW are a popular choice. An SRT diesel for Europe would therefore make a lot of sense. Whether the technology makes it back across the pond, as always, depends on cost of diesel and whether the cars could meet emissions regulations.
